Briefing: Energy Justice for Everyone in Washington

  • Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility 2524 16th Avenue South, Ste 300 Seattle, WA, 98144 United States (map)

From our partners at Front & Centered:
Everyone in Washington State needs access to affordable, reliable, renewable energy. The COVID pandemic has brought into clear view what we already knew: staying connected to energy sustains and saves lives. We also know that Washington has one of the most regressive tax systems in the nation (see this article and report). Our unfair tax system extends to utility rates disproportionately impacting communities where people who can least afford the health and economic challenges of disconnection are at greatest risk of having their power shut off.

At the same time, equitable access to energy undergirds Washington’s economic resilience, renewable energy transition, and public health outcomes. We need solutions that make it easier and more affordable for Washington families to stay connected to power and accelerate our transition to 100% renewable energy that leaves no one behind.

As the 2022 Legislative Session kicks off next week, Front and Centered wants to invite you to learn more about our Energy For All proposal (HB1490) which requires energy utilities to offer low income customers and customers with disabilities the option of having their bills capped at 3% of their household income for residential use. Join our virtual community briefing to hear more about how Energy For All can help frontline communities meet the challenges they face and how you can get involved to make this idea a reality.
