Open Planning Meeting: Economic Inequality

WPSR's Inequality Task Force is convening a half-day planning session in Seattle (exact location TBD). WPSR board members, Drs. Stephen Bezruchka, Mary Weiss, Adam Hoverman, and Noah Silver, will help facilitate this brainstorming and planning session. We will have other experts on hand to introduce us to potential new opportunities for WPSR to positively impact economic and health inequities in WA State.

For the last several years, WPSR has maintained a small but important program on economic inequality. Research suggests our nation’s growing inequality gap is one of several causes of diminished population health outcomes, contributing to higher mortality and shortened lifespans. To combat this, we have previously advocated for raising minimum wage and for implementing a statewide paid parental leave policy.

With the passage of a statewide paid leave policy by the Washington state legislature this year (we’re still celebrating!), we are now looking toward defining our next goals. Our Inequality Task Force is thinking big, and we want to include diverse voices in this conversation. That’s why we invite YOU to join us.

We don’t want to script the conversation too much, but issues and solutions discussed may include:

  • building awareness of US and Washington's health status
  • a statewide income tax
  • early childhood support and interventions
  • violence prevention
  • substance abuse

Will you join us? If so, please register here. We will be in touch with additional details and background reading material to help you prepare.
