Environment & Human Health
WPSR’s Environment & Human Health Committee strives to create a healthy world for all by eliminating toxic chemicals and addressing other threats to human and environmental health. We especially focus on safeguarding children’s health, learning potential, and futures. By lending your voices and participation as health professionals, our combined efforts can help protect families, neighbors and communities from harmful environmental exposures, and move towards a healthy and sustainable Washington.
We currently concentrate our efforts on the following issues:
- Eliminating Toxic Flame Retardants, or Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs)
- Phasing out PVC Medical Devices Containing DEHP
- Working to Establish Safer Chemicals Policies and Phasing Out Persistent Bioaccumulative Toxic Chemicals (PBTs)
- Through In Harm’s Way programs, providing trainings for health professionals regarding toxic threats to child development
- Collaborating on Healthy Homes and Indoor Air
- Assisting with CleanMed 2008 to advance environmentally preferable products in health care

WPSR tackles the pressing issue of climate change and its effects on health and the environment through its Energy and Peace Committee.
WPSR works on these issues in collaboration with, and as a steering committee member of, The Toxic-Free Legacy Coalition (www.toxicfreelegacy.org) (TFL).
WPSR also coordinates with Health Care Without Harm (HCHW) www.noharm.org in work encouraging health care’s use of products and processes that are preferable for human health and the environment.
